Swansea in Wales

Swansea is located on the south coast of Wales. It is famous as the birthplace of Welsh author, playwright and poet Dylan Thomas. And it is his famous quote, ‘this ugly lovely town’, that many believe still best describes the area today. Though with all the modern shopping and entertainment facilities you could ask for, not to mention the sea and scenic countryside just on your doorstep, it certainly has plenty to offer. Going back in time Swansea has been a trading port since Norman times, and during the Middle Ages it built up a strong export trade from its locally mined coal. Whilst during the 18th century it became known as the copper capital of the world, due to its wealthy copper smelting industry. Further industries such as steel making were also big business. Yet it was its thriving industrial history that made it a target of World War II air raids, and as a consequence it suffered a devastating amount of destruction. In the post-war years its lack of historic architecture led to a bleak landscape, from which it took a long time to properly recover. However, in recent years much regeneration has occurred bringing new life to the area. This is clearly evident in the Maritime Quarter that is now home to luxury apartments and top restaurants, as well as great views out over Swansea Bay. The area also boasts further good looks in the popular resort of Mumbles on the outskirts of Swansea that is packed with pubs and guesthouses. It’s also where Swanseas most famous daughter, Catherine Zeta-Jones, is currently having a beachside retreat built. Whilst further to the west lies the Gower Peninsula, an area of outstanding natural beauty where the National Trust owns much of the land. Here you’ll find fantastic sandy beaches, scenic cliff top walks, and great watersports such as surfing and water skiing.
